Default Upgrading Tablet to XP Tablet Edition

I bought a Fujitsu Stylistic LT 500 Tablet PC off of a friend a few days ago
to use in College. It has 15GB of HDD and 128 MB of RAM with a 500 Mhz
Processor and is currently running Windows 2000. I was thinking of upgrading
it to Windows XP Tablet Edition, since I do have a unused version if it. I
have a few questions:

1. Would this be a good idea? I have heard that it works better than
Windows 2000.

2. Also this tablet has a USB port but no CD-ROM drive, so the second
question would be if I plug in a USB CD-ROM drive and then insert the Windows
XP Tablet install CD and install XP using that, would the install possibly
crash because its using a USB CD-ROM drive instead of a built-in CD-ROM drive?

Thanks!

Hi,
check Fujitsu website how much RAM is supported and try to add as much as
you can - there is no pleasure to run XP under 512 MB.
Insert a bootable CD and try to boot from that CD. Perhaps you have to allow
booting from USB in BIOS first. Check that. If it boots you should feel save
to install XP.

Well I haven't checked to see if the BIOS will support booting a USB Drive,
but I have a second question.

The drivers for the Tablet PC are made for Windows 2000. Would I be able to
use those drivers for after I install Windows XP? Or does XP Tablet include
generic drivers?

Thanks!

XP Tablet PC Edition will almost certainly NOT work on this machine. XP TPC
Edition is designed to run on specific hardware requirements and I'm
reasonably sure this machine doesn't support those requirements. (for one
thing, the digitizer doesn't sample frequently enough to do character
recognition well enough.)

There's a good reason XP Tablet PC Edition was never sold directly, but only
available in OEM.

I honestly don't have full knowledge of the requirements. I know that the
Tablet team at MS worked directly with hardware OEMs to certify hardware
that met the requirements, and then the OEM could market the PC as a "Tablet
PC". And ship it with Tablet PC Edition. There was no legal way to use a
copy of Tablet PC Edition except with OEM hardware that I'm aware of.

The short answer is, if it didn't ship with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in
the first place, it's not a Tablet PC and you can't install Tablet PC
Edition on it. (Of course, if it shipped with Vista originally, and Vista
"turned on" the Tablet features (which it only does when it recognizes
appropriate hardware), then that qualifies as well. Vista is different in
that there isn't a separate Tablet PC Edition, it's part of the regular
Windows Vista. (I think Home Premium is the minimum requirement.)

Well could I put Windows XP Home on it? Would there be some way that I could
install the Tablet Drivers on it?

The manufacturer released the drivers for this tablet laptop for Windows
2000, so would the drivers for Windows 2000 work for Windows XP Home?

Thanks!

Default Re: Upgrading Tablet to XP Tablet Edition

Just do a full backup of your hard disk and try XP Tablet so that you could
safely return to your installed OS if that isn't successful.
If XP Home runs on it, XP Tablet should do so, too. But it won't be fun
without touch input support. Recognition is integrated in XP Tablet, if you
choose XP Home, you'd need something like ritePen (www.ritescript.com) for
handwriting recognition. But to get it working on XP Home or Tablet, you
must have drivers for the touch device.
Regarding the drivers, some W2k drivers do work on XP, too. As you have your
machine up and running, you may check the manufacturer of the touch device
and look for XP drivers for the touch device on the manufacturer's website.
Maybe there are none, then you might give the W2k drivers a try:

So you'll have to spend some time and try it on your own:
Goto http://support.fujitsupc.com/CS/Por...?srch=DOWNLOADS and
look for drivers for your Tablet PC. Fujitsu offers a recommended BIOS
udpate and then there are drivers for Win98 and Win2k.
Again, don't forget to put as much RAM as possible into the device, from the
specs it seems that 512 is the maximum the chipset supports.

Default Re: Upgrading Tablet to XP Tablet Edition

No, Home Edition is not Tablet Edition.

I'm having a really hard time understanding what you're trying to
accomplish. The machine is working with Windows 2000, has drivers for
Windows 2000, use it with 2000. You could try to move to XP, but nothing you
do will change that it is NOT a Tablet PC in the Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition sense of the word. The most you could hope for running XP on it is
that your stylus would behave as a mouse. It will not be a pen and do Ink in
the sense of a Tablet PC. So what will you gain by moving to XP?
